The transhumance in Val Senales Valley, which is still practiced and deeply rooted in local tradition, dates back 600 years. This ancient tradition is now part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The annual migration in Val Senales Valley is the only cross-border and trans-glacial transhumance in existence. Every year, the shepherds lead flocks of 3,000 – 4,000 sheep on a mass migration from Vernago and Maso Corto across two mountain passes to the fertile pastures of Vent in neighboring Austria. The transhumance in the Val Senales Valley covers more than 40km, across gullies and snow-covered fields.
In September, shepherds bring sheep and goats back to the valley at Vernago and Maso Corto.
This old, but still living tradition can be experienced on 8th September in Maso Corto.
Our tip: The Roter Kofel chairlift (opens already at 09:00 am) brings guests to the sheeps and gives them the opportunity to observe them up close and accompany them down into the valley.
